Jenny Tucker

*Responses accepted until February 17, 2026*

Dear Firebird Families,

As we move toward unifying our two middle schools into one community, we are inviting all students, staff, and families to participate in the naming process.

We are seeking suggestions that celebrate Kettering’s rich history while reflecting a unified vision for our students' future. Your input will be vital in the recommendations provided to the Board of Education.

Naming Guidelines:

  • Unify: Choose names that make everyone feel included.

  • History: Consider names that celebrate our local heritage.

  • Timeless: Pick a name that will stand the test of time.

Please take a moment to share your suggestions by clicking on the link below. The link can be used multiple times if you have more than one person in your household who would like to submit suggestions for the new name. *Responses accepted until February 17, 2026*

Ohio House Bill 96 Brings Changes to Attendance Laws
Kari Basson

Ohio House Bill 96 took effect on September 30, 2025.

  • The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce released official guidance in mid-October, requiring all school districts to align with this new law.
  • The Kettering City Schools are actively implementing these changes to ensure full legal compliance, while maintaining a commitment to fairness, transparency, and partnership with our KCS families.
  • Under the new law, medical absences are no longer counted separately from other excused absences.
  • What this means is that ALL time missed from school—whether excused, medical, or unexcused—now counts toward a student’s total hours missed for the school year.
  • The new attendance requirements will take full effect with the 2026–2027 school year. Selected components of the new law will be phased in, beginning with the second semester of the current 2025–2026 school year to allow a smooth and consistent transition.
